How long should you study for a clinical licensure exam?

Eight to twelve weeks around a full caseload, and why reasoning practice beats rereading theory.

Most people sitting a clinical licensure exam are also carrying a full caseload. The realistic plan isn’t a study season—it’s eight to twelve weeks of protected daily practice.

Here’s how to size it and spend it.

Let a diagnostic set the runway

Take a full-length practice exam before choosing a timeline. Within ten points of passing, eight weeks of targeted review is usually enough; bigger gaps—or years since graduate school—earn the full twelve.

Study reasoning, not recall

Licensure exams live in FIRST, BEST, and MOST questions, where every option is defensible and one is correct. Rereading theory doesn’t train that; answering questions and dissecting rationales does.

Build your safety-and-ethics decision frameworks until they’re reflexes—those questions decide borderline results.

A caseload-friendly cadence

  • 45–60 minutes daily beats weekend marathons—consistency compounds.
  • One mixed-topic quiz weekly to keep old material warm.
  • Final two weeks: two timed full-lengths to build four-hour stamina.
